Groove Armada: Andy Cato’s Afterhours Mix

Tune in now...

Groove Armada are steeped in club history.

From disco to house, techno to soul there’s little that the duo’s record collections don’t encompass. Currently on the backburner, Groove Armada’s hiatus is allowing the pair to indulge their appetites for more left field projects.

Andy Cato, for example, is working on a solo project. Constructed in hotel rooms, backstage areas and departure lounges, the producer has spent almost two years fiddling with the material.

Now he’s ready. Out on April 29th via Apollo / R&S, new album ‘Times And Places’ is a reflective effort from the producer. Introspective, the album represents a series of aural postcards from Andy Cato’s whirlwind career.

Ahead of this, Andy Cato has pieced together a mix which Clash are pleased to premiere. Here’s a little more from the producer.

Barcelona 2001.The police had left us to it on the beach for Sant Joan (festival of fire). Soundsystems lined the shore, but we'd managed to smuggle down a function 1 and were having the best of it. My cousin Digs (DiY) dropped into play. The house groove rolled on. At dawn we moved inside to a warehouse nearby. And from the there it was back to Dave's place. Not sure who Dave was, but he had a nice roof terrace. So I dug around in the record box trying to find dubs, edits or B sides to suit the rising sun. A few weeks later, someone gave me a tape of it. Apparently Dave had got himself organised with the C60s. So here it is. A rambling soundtrack to a hazy morning.

Listen to it now.

Ahead of the release of 'Time And Places' Andy Cato has agreed to piece together a new exhibition. Collating material from two decades in the limelight, the exhibition begins with the dawning of the rave era before following club culture as it develops a global infrastructure.

Taking place at the Book Club in London, the exhibition opens with a private viewing on April 25th. Running until June 25th, this is much more than mere reminiscence from Andy Cato – instead, the producer is able to pick apart dance music from the inside, offering a remarkable insight into a lasting career.
