Long running American punk band Green Day grew out of the Californian punk underground. Signing to a major label, their debut album proper was the phenomenally successful 'Dookie'. The band spent the bulk of the 90s living in its shadow, still recording but selling albums in ever decreasing amounts. 2004's politically charged epic 'American Idiot' found the band re-energized and became a global best seller.
