Fiery Furnaces Album Latest

'I'm Going Away' due soon

Brooklyn two piece Fiery Furnaces are set to return with their first studio album since 2007, titled ‘I’m Going Away’.

Formed by brother and sister pairing Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger, Fiery Furnaces blend bubblegum pop with garage rock. The group often get compared to The White Stripes but unlike the Detroit group didn’t have to make the whole family thing up to avoid difficult questions.

Signed to Rough Trade, the group have not released a studio album since 2007’s ‘Widow City’, although a lengthy live album ‘Remember’ sneaked out last year. Compiled from various shows throughout the band’s career, it wasn’t the most appropriate introduction for newcomers but fans revelled in more than 50 tracks.

The new album finds Matthew Friedberger writing the music, while sister Eleanor handles the lyrics. All except for the title track, of course, which is traditional and hence will do nothing to discourage The White Stripes comparisons.

Sebadoh disciple Jason Lowenstein helped with the recording, which is only one of a number of projects the band are working on. Fiery Furnaces recently announced they are working on something called a ‘Silent Record’ which should be easy to do – just sit in a room with the instruments switched off.

Fiery Furnaces are also working on a new project named ‘Democ-rock’ which has been inspired by pieces of paper thrown onto the stage during a recent tour. Click here to read more about the bizarre project!

In a statement Fiery Furnaces revealed they wanted “Expired video rental cards, never-to-be-paid parking tickets, rude requests from your step-children, fawning memos from employees you intend to lay-off, drug-store coupons clipped but not redeemed because you missed the bus and the sale ended that night (or so the manager said), ATM receipts left by the previous withdrawer, the proverbial laundry list, examples of your left-handed handwriting, cigarette packet promotional paraphernalia: all are welcome.”

The project is apparently inspired by their recent tour in support of Barack Obama.

The band are well known for being productive, and recently revealed that they are working on a Biblical themed set of recordings named ‘Stories From The Old Testament By The Fiery Furnaces’.

Fiery Furnaces are set to release their new album ‘I’m Going Away’ on July 21st in the United States. Full tracklisting is as follows:
