“For a long time I couldn’t even name a band from South Africa that I really liked. And it’s still kind of like that.”

Cherilyn , the singer-songwriter frontwoman of Dear Reader, is lamenting the lack of a music scene in her home country. “It’s very hard to be an English [speaking] band in this country unless you’re making real pop music, or Afrikaans rock music, otherwise you can’t make enough money to even just live. I guess that’s partly why the scene is so small, because people don’t do it; they go and study accounting because they have to.”
