Byron Lee was born into a musical family, familiar with traditional Caribbean form such as mento and calypso. Becoming a band leader, he helped pioneer the ska sound and remained an important figure in Jamaican music for five decades. His record label Dynamic Sounds produced some important reggae records, while his annual 'Jamaican Festival' helped unite the often class-ridden island. Members
