Dark Dark Dark – Who Needs Who

Born from heartache

The cheeriness of Dark Dark Dark’s first album has been replaced in ‘Who Needs Who’ by a much darker, brooding tone. A relationship breakdown between the band’s two founders, singer Nona Marie Invie and producer Marshall LaCount, is laid bare, but with dramatic and beautiful consequences. The Beirut jolliness slips back into a more minimalist outfit, percussion and piano heavy with bursts of brass whipping out like a lizard’s tongue. It lies somewhere between Regina Spektor and a less dreamy Beach House, with a touch of the theatrical. Some super songs and arrangements – the Parisian ‘Without You’ and the glorious ‘Meet Me In The Dark’ especially – have been born from this heartache.
